But e Bamian (in Persian بت های باميان) is a monumental statue of a Buddha.
Its carved into a big cliff in the Bamian (or Bamyan) valley. The height of this thing is approximately 50 meters and it's about 2000 years old. It used to be very a very detailed standing with expressions and colours on the face.

Bombed & rebuild:

The Taliban bombed But e Bamian in 2001 (in orders of Mullah Mohammed Omar). The reason was that it were Budhist statues which are forbidden in Afghanistan. There is also made a ducumentary called: "The Giant Buddhas".
May 200: the Afghan government asked some Japanese artists to rebuild another one to replicate the original but e bamian using laser techniques. The project will be finished by 2012.
